Vintage film : Mukti (1937)

Mukti, directed by P C Barua was released in 1937. Kanan Devi, whom P C Barua wanted to play the lead in his earlier film Devdas (1935), but she couldn’t, was the lead actress and singer. P C Barua himself was in the male lead. Music was directed by Pankaj Mullick. Mukti made Kanan Devi a star which led to her fruitful association with New Theatres, Calcutta. The storyline of the film was much ahead of it’s time.

This classic adultery story is about an artist, Prasant (P C Barua) who is married to the rich Chitra (Kanan Devi). The couple are in love but neither partner is prepared to compromise their ideals. The marriage falls apart. Prasant concedes his wife’s demand for a divorce and goes to the jungles of Assam, where for many years his closest associates are a wild elephant and Jharna, the wife of an innkeeper named Pahari (Pankaj Mullick). Chitra marries a millionaire, Bipul and they go on an elephant hunt. They kill Prasant’s pet elephant. Since Chitra believes Prasant to be dead, he avoids meeting her, but rescues her from the villainous Bipul. Prasant succeeds but dies at Chitra’s feet.

Thank you Indianraga! It would be great if you could list all the songs in the film even if downloads are not available. It is nice to have the synopsis of the film too. Where do you get all the info? 🙂

Thanks for visiting again and giving me your valuable feedback. One reason I have not posted all the songs is, I really don’t have them. Moreover, I am short of server space needed for the .mp3 files. As you know, .mp3 files are the most volatile ones. They are there one day and disappear as fast as you blink your eye.

I have 3 blogs, all music related, and I know you will understand the difficulties I face to maintain the music links and to keep them alive and kicking. The info on the films is gathered from friends and other websites, edited to eliminate errors, and posted here. In fact, my posts, on all my blogs, are not posts at all, they are mere snippets. 🙂

But what snippets! 🙂 Keep up the good work! the volatile nature of the files also make it imperative for me to download them fast, isn’t it? I am hoping thebroadband will get restored fast…

Note that Sharabi Soch Na Kar is a duet between Pankaj Mullick and Kalyani Mitra, who was also a singer in famous Qawwali ‘Aahein Na Bhari’ in Zeenat (1945), she also acts in the song.

There is at least one more song sung by Kanan Devi “Kaisa Ujada Chaman Khushi Ka,” which is on record.

Thanks for making these great songs available as MP3s. I have come back to this post a little over a year after you put it together because I have just watched the film on YouTube. It’s been posted very recently, in a decent copy with English subtitles, in 12 parts. Part 1 is here:
